- Hi. Here's a bit of venting that I can't be bothered to turn into a separate blog post. Social media is often toxic - we all know this. But why does it feel like so many users these days get a kick out bullying random people online? I was just scrolling through my Instagram feed and a video of a presumably local metal band playing some sort of mini gig in a HMV store popped up. The band were having fun, the people in the store were having fun. All the highest favourited comments were a bunch of dickheads posting comments like "cringe", "nonces", "CEX Christmas party", "Discord server" and other mocking memes etc.. How much of a loser do you have to be to post shitty comments like that just because it's not your scene or something you know nothing about? It's the internet - trolls exist everywhere of course, so you just ignore it. But I dunno, every once in a while I see something that just annoys me, and I don't even use social media all that often, let alone post much at all. I just scroll occasionally when I'm on my break at work... I guess I just hate bullies.

There's stuff I don't agree with and dislike, but I'm not sad enough to comment or hurl insults at people to make myself feel big. I'll refer to bullies with insults though, sure. Anyway, another example of what I'm talking about is here in the UK we sometimes have these 'Community Speed Watch' volunteers - local people who volunteer to monitor drivers' speeds in whatever area they live in. Because they're not police, you just get a letter telling you off in the post if you speed rather than a fine and points (or whatever). I personally would never go out of my way to volunteer for this kind of work, but you know what? When a local council posts photos thanking the people that go out their way to do this, I don't immediately start commenting "nonce" and reacting with laughing emojis like the stupidly high number of complete tossers in this country do.

Like I said, social media is toxic. Best to just leave it alone in a lot of cases, and I'm sure many people just brush off a lot of these wankers' comments. But I'll bet some of these bellends have done lots of damage to plenty of people too. Rant over.

Cheers,
Adam
